Behind The Scenes: Ghost Hunters at the Zoo

Tonight the TAPS team will take on a whole different kind of case, as they investigate America's oldest zoo in Philadelphia. TV Guide has a short piece online which features some behind the scenes moments from the team's investigation.
"This is our first chance to investigate a zoo," says TAPS' lead investigator Jason Hawes. "And to do it at the first zoo in America is great." Still, the site's history had Hawes' partner-in-paranormality Grant Wilson feeling a little cagey. "It's supposedly a Native American burial ground. William Penn's grandson had a house here, it's been a zoo forever...it could be totally different hauntings than we're used to."
Investigator Britt Griffith powwows with Wilson and Hawes to map out the night's locations, which include a grassy knoll where spotting a ghostly Native American won't be their only problem. "We've never been in an area where we don't know what sounds are gonna come out," says Wilson. "We might hear a bear. We might hear [birds]. So we have to pay really attention to the audio."
Before the investigation begins, Griffith goes over each group's assignment from a central location (aka, the team's van). The key to rattling ghosts into activity? "Treat them with respect," urges Hawes. "They're just people. They had families, they had lives. So you go in there, be honest with them, tell them what you're doing. You just talk to them."
"Paranormal investigating is possibly one of the most boring hobbies a person can have," quips Amy Bruni as she fires up an infrared-equipped DV recorder for a long night of waiting and watching. "It looks really exciting on the show because we go to the best locations."

Kris & Amy Talk About the New Season, Horror Movies, & More

In a new interview with The Futon Critic, Amy Bruni & Kris Williams talk about the new season of Ghost Hunters (which premieres tonight), working with the Real Houswives of Atlanta, the role of women in the paranormal field, what actually scares them, and more.

JH: Do you watch any of the paranormal-type horror movies that are out there or would you be too critical of the field to enjoy it?
AB: If it's an old school movie like 'The Shining' or 'The Exorcist' then I'm down but I haven't seen 'Paranormal Activity' or anything like that.

JH: What else are we going to see on this show in the upcoming new episodes?

AB: We went to Philadelphia Zoo, which was a new thing for all of us. The Real Housewives of Atlanta come out and hang out with us in Atlanta.

JH: I want to see that episode! Talk about two very different shows coming together!

AB: It was really interesting, actually. I was definitely like 'Huh?' when they said that but you'll be surprised at what you see.

KW: They were coming in with their high heels and big hair but it actually went really well. They did great.

TAPS Reaches Out to Girl with Cancer

Maybe before blaming TAPS for the RI flooding, the reverend behind it should have read this. In the newest issue of Ecto Magazine, a ghost hunters centric paranormal magazine, there is an article about a young fan of Ghost Hunters, Katelyn Rose Sass, that has been fighting cancer since September of 2008. Her mother contacted a TAPS family member who managed to get the attention of Jason & Grant who, along with Dustin, Steve, Tango, Kris, and others, sent Katelyn signed photos. They could have stopped there, but they did even more than that. The Ghost Hunters International team raised awareness for the cause during a charity event and team member Paul Bradford raised money for Katelyn through his online store, Creepy Hollow Gear. Read the whole story on the Ecto Magazine website. The article has also been published in Issue 3 of the magazine along with an article about paranormal television written by yours truly!

Ghost Hunters to Investigate Philadelphia Zoo

The Ghost Hunters are headed to Philadelphia to investigate America's oldest zoo, the Philadelphia Zoo. They will be shooting and episode tomorrow and Friday nights, according to Philly.Com. Although home to many animals, the ghosts that are said to haunt the administration building and other locations around the zoo are all human in form. The investigation will air in fall.

THE PHILADELPHIA Zoo is haunted, say staffers who are glad that they may soon have some understanding of what spirit or spirits could inhabit America's oldest zoo.

The SyFy Network's "Ghost Hunters" will shoot at the zoo tomorrow and Thursday nights, investigating several areas where workers have reported flickering lights or apparitions.

The locations include Solitude House, which John Penn, grandson of William Penn, built in 1784 and which formerly housed reptiles; the Penrose building, which used to be a research laboratory and vet hospital; and the Shelly building, now used for
zoo administration.

"We feel very strongly that there is some sort of haunting here, and we're looking forward to finding out what," says Kirsten Wilf, marketing specialist for the zoo. Wilf says that Jody McNeil Lewis, vice chair of the board, had the idea to contact "Ghost Hunters."

Wilf says that employees have seen only human forms. No animal spirits are thought to be haunting the premises. Lewis, who is among those who have seen evidence of hauntings, is to be interviewed, as are revenue-control supervisor Will Gonzalez and primate keeper Desiree Haneman.
